For those interested, I've completed a the preliminary patch for this 
functionality. It's available at:

http://www.the-bofh.org/projects/distcc-env/

I'd be interested to know if this is at all useful for other projects or 
if it helps others perhaps use GCC bootstraps (especially across BSD 
systems).
