Well, I searched the list archives and came up with the fact that I
should switch to %U as a workaround.

However, what puzzles me is that this worked before with smbpasswd (it
would seem to me that this really is not too related to the passdb
backend, so I have trouble understanding it). Shouldn't this have been
broken before? Also, what if I don't really want %U and I really DO want
%u? Am I left without an option?

In any case, the problem appears to be solved now:

(it appears the %u was taken literally, not expanded to pricepa).
