Why varying size of smb in memory?

Why do I see variations in the size of the running smb daemon? Here's an
example of the output from from ps:

USER PID %CPU %MEM SIZE RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
root 2288 0.0 1.3 1996 844 ? S Feb 12 0:00 smbd -D
root 2297 0.0 1.3 1616 872 ? S Feb 12 0:00 nmbd -D
root 4006 0.0 2.0 3320 1300 ? S Feb 13 0:00 smbd -D

Why is the size difference (1996 vs. 3320) so great?

BTW, this is Samba v2.0.2 running under RedHat v5.2 with a v2.2.1 kernel.

Thank you.
