I had recent (yesterday) success with using the instructions at
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Install/Ubuntu/Dapper/XGL. YMMV
depending on whether you:
* want XGL vs AIGLX
* want Beryl vs Compiz
* have ATI vs nvidia
* are using dapper or edgy
See http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Install/Ubuntu and make your
choices.
Here's the thing, though. I wobbled some windows around, and loved it.
And then I found some of the things that currently get in the way of my
functionality:
* you can't use KDE's virtual desktop - all your windows appear on one
desktop to KDE, but (I assume) Beryl then puts them on different sides
of the cube. I had no idea how much I liked the idea of being able to
click on the virtual desktop to go straight there, until I couldn't do it
* things like VMware wouldn't go full screen - I surmise it was
something to do with VMware not being able to find out the resolution of
the desktop, or not being able to convice the window manager to not
decorate it. Or something
* all the windows in the taskbar showed up on the bottom of every
desktop (I assume because KDE thought they were all on the one desktop
So, I'm back to using normal X with KWin (a.o.t. Xgl with Beryl). It's
impressive stuff, though.
