Just because you are asking: I have not done the due diligence on the
exit behaviour yet that would be required for a proper bug report, so
apologies for not giving you the full diagnosis yet.

This is the picture I get when doing a "kill -15" on the parent
process of the "samba" processes:

25255 ?        S      0:00 bin/samba
25513 ?        S      0:00  \_ sh -c /bin/sleep 999999999
25514 ?        S      0:00      \_ /bin/sleep 999999999
25266 ?        S      0:00 bin/samba
25511 ?        S      0:00  \_ sh -c /bin/sleep 999999999
25512 ?        S      0:00      \_ /bin/sleep 999999999

To my uninformed eye this looks surprising.
