Thanks for adding the new freelist walk when a merge created
a fresh candidate. This potentially avoids enlarging the
database when not strictly necessary. All this looks
like a significant improvement to me, but going through this
to make sure it really does what it supposed to do will take
some really thorough walk-through as you might guess :-)
