FSMO fails to trasfer

Hi
I am replacing my ageing Samba4 AD DC (running stable-ish at alpha17) with a
two new Samba4 AD DCs (with 4.0.9). I can join the new DCs fine, but when i try
to remove the old one trouble starts.
transfering FSMO roles gives (slightly different line numbers for other roles):
ERROR: Failed to initiate transfer of 'pdc' role: Failed FSMO transfer:
WERR_BADFILE
File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/samba/netcmd/fsmo.py", line 65, in
transfer_role
when I try seize (with the old DC turned off), some of the roles are seized OK,
but "naming" gives the same message, and fails to seize.
Is this expected? wiki page says FSMO transfer is somewhat broken, but the
linked bug seems to be fixed in 4.0.9
Is this possibly caused by the alpha build in the original DC? would upgrading
it first help?
debug level 10 shows way more messages, but nothing that seems related to the
actual error.
thanks
