Samba4 Hardware Question

Do most people have their file storage (for Users, like for Folder
Redirect) local to the Samba4 server?  In the past, with Samba3, I've
always had my Samba server be a small VM that mapped a large file store via
NFS.  Since Samba4 requires ACL, and I can't seem to get ACL to work over
NFSv4 (and not totally clear on if it should work or not), should I use
iSCSI, or create local storage?  Thanks for your advice.
