Why does configure.developer use -gstabs in Samba3?

Hi all,
Is there a good reason why configure.developer in Samba3 uses
"-gstabs"? Would a simple "-g" be a sufficient replacement?
This doesn't work on all versions of gcc:
jpeach:~/samba/svn/branches/SAMBA_3_0/source> ./configure.developer
...
checking whether building shared libraries actually works... cc1: warning: `stabs': unknown or unsupported -g option
yes
...
jpeach:~/samba/svn/branches/SAMBA_3_0/source> gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.3.3 (SuSE Linux)
