samba client tools useability

Hi Team,

I am in the process of learnig capabilites of samba server.

I have a network of Linux and Mainframes OS, I am trying to access Linux
system from mainframe for files service.

So i thought of installing the samba client utilities on my Mainframes OS
and can get access to the samba server.

I would like to know can we use only samba client tools to access the samba
server and also is it possible to use the samba client API ( Application
Programm Interface ) to communicate with the server.

Please guide me,
