Look like a name collision which came in with an update to lib/util.c, in
version 1.287.4.29. It's been in there since the 17th.
I think xmalloc needs to be renamed.

Subject: Compiling /lib/readline.c
I am trying to compile the latest CVS version of Samba 2.2 on a
Solaris box with readline-4.2 installed. When I try to compile Samba I get
the following error:
Compiling lib/readline.c
lib/readline.c: In function `smb_readline':
lib/readline.c:34: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type
Linking bin/smbclient
ld: fatal: symbol `xmalloc' is multiply-defined:
(file lib/util.o and file
/usr/local/lib/libreadline.a(xmalloc.o));
ld: fatal: File processing errors. No output written to bin/smbclient
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
*** Error code 1
