Sure. Andy Bakun's open/close command patch will do it.

Example:

[applaunch]
	path = /var/tmp/applaunch/%u
	close command = /usr/local/libexec/my_start_cmd_via_smb %u %f
	...

(I'd pass in other arguments as well, but that's just an example).

Then /usr/local/libexec/my_start_cmd_via_smb opens the given file that's
just been closed by the client, validates the contents of the file,
checks the user's authorization and if all is well then it starts the
application named in the file. Of course, my_start_cmd_via_smb would not
be a part of Samba.

The way I would code that my_start_cmd_via_smb script would support the
following file format:

XAUTHORITY=<xauth info>
APPLICATION=<name of app family>
COMMAND=<actuall app [not path] to launch>

This would remove any need for 'magic script'.

'open command' has different uses.
