[Patch] Configure broken for Solaris 2.6 (PR#12014)

gcc-2.7.2.1.  We have one other Solaris 2.6 system with gcc-2.8.1
and it works with that compiler.  Go figure.

Perhaps we can come up with a method that'll work with both
GNU compilers, or teach configure to correct for quirky gcc
versions?
