Hi Imram,
We are using 8011b for client connection (still the best for
distance/speed ) and 802.11a for backbones as they can't be used in
multi-point applications requiring a bit of work to adjust ACK time-outs
http://www.air-stream.org/ACK_Timeouts but that do give up +1.2 to1.6M
Bytes/sec so well worth the effort :-)
As we use multiple wireless interfaces dedicated to each purpose,
consequently the boards we require multiple PCIs so a standard PC is
very popular or WRAP boards depending on the installation. Consequently
the main OS is FreeBSD with Zebra to run BGP for routing. We find
FreeBSD support the wireless cards the best.
Nevertheless there are a few embed devices around using OpenWRT either
the Linksys WRT54s or the R100s we have one site that runs three R100s
and a WRAP connected together by a switch, so I guess you could call
this a Hybrid.
As for 802.11n we had two WRT300n routers donated by Linksys
http://www.air-stream.org.au/wrt300n_review . It would seem 802.11n has
a lot of potential unfortunately there are not open source drivers
available, equally no bridged ethernet clients, so we have come to a
brick wall with that project. Nevetheless we are planning to do some
outdoor distance tests as soon as a I find time to build some
directional prototype antennas and money for some pci cards which means
tests will be in MS or OSX as they are only drivers :-P
Cheers
Robert
