Feedback of my experiences with 2 different SMC2635W cards.
(Thanks for all information posted already)
I have an HP Omnibook 6000 with Debian Sarge 2.4.27-1-686
and had two SMC2635W 's with 2 different part numbers:
The red face plate card:
EZ Connect SMC2635W (Red Face plate)
Part No.:99-012084-122 Made in Taiwan
FCC ID: HEDWN3304B17 filing date around May 2003.
vendor 0x1317, device 0x8201 (in /var/log/syslog upon insertion)
cardctl ident returns simply:no product info available
The blue face plate card:
EZ Connect SMC2635W
Part No.:99-012084-122 Made in Taiwan
FCC ID: HEDWN33006A2ACC filing date around April 2003.
vendor 0x1814, device 0x0101 (in /var/log/syslog upon insertion)
cardctl ident returns simply:no product info available
With the red card
Thanks to http://www.latinsud.com/adm8211/english.html
instructions, I downloaded
http://www.latinsud.com/adm8211/ADM8211_src_105.tar.gz
$gzcat ADM8211_src_105.tar.gz|tar -xvf -
$cd ADM821
$make
su
#insmod -f 8211.o
#ifconfig eth1 up
and I was connected.
Note: `insmod' command worked only if the card was inserted-otherwise,
I would get:
8211.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
Before arriving there, I had installed several packages:
pcmcia-cs (/sbin/cardctl)
kernel-pcmcia-modules-2.4-686
kernel-pcmcia-modules-2.4.7-1-686
linux-wlan-ng
linux-wlan-ng-modules-2.4.27-1-686
wireless-tools (/sbin/iwconfig)
net-tools (/sbin/ifconfig)
gnome-system-tools (/usr/bin/network-admin)
ifscheme
ifupdown
hotplug
I have to read through:
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Tools.html
to see which one is recommended to use/keep to set
/etc/network/interfaces
/etc/pcmcia/config
and other things properly.
The blue card remains driver-less:
