For some reason (having changed basically nothing), that repeatable problem, and my earlier repeatable DHCP problem, are no longer repeatable. Basically, the two problems I have now are the need to iwconfig all 4 key slots, and that I'm getting lots of BAP writing errors, looking like: Jan 3 19:02:12 samosa kernel: eth1: Error -110 writing packet header to BAP Jan 3 19:02:12 samosa last message repeated 228 times These cause occasional freezes, especially when the watchdog timer has to detect the problem and reset. The BAP errors are why I'm interested in a port of the newer driver code; I see notes about those being fixed there, and I know that newer drivers fixed these problems for my PCMCIA card a while back. But, other than these, the built-in wireless is working quite well now. Thanks for all your help. As Jamz D. Boman stated the sections 42, 43, 44 exclude the use of a "network unit" to provide a carriage service without a license. Going back to section 25 however, the definition of "network unit" we want is the "designated radio communications unit". This is then defined in sections 34 and 35 (theres others like satellite which won't apply to us), with both of these sections refering to 34 1h), where it then points to 34 3a), stating: (3) For the purposes of paragraph (1)(h), a network is an exempt network if: (a) the network is used, or for use, for the sole purpose of supplying carriage services on a non-commercial basis; or (b) the network is of a kind specified in the regulations. So from my reading of it, the later sections (43, 44, 45) wrt to carrier licenses don't even apply, as our network units are excepmt. I'd appreciate comments on whether this line of reading is correct. The TELECOMMUNICATIONS ACT related to physical connections. The RADIOCOMMUNICATIONS refers to RADIO links. The question becomes is the link that crosses the property boundry a CONNECTED MEDIUM or a TRANSMITTED MEDIUM. The act actually describes LINE line means a wire, cable, optical fibre, tube, conduit, waveguide or other physical medium used, or for use, as a continuous artificial guide for or in connection with carrying communications by means of guided electromagnetic energy. I'm using a NetGear wireless router, XP and Redhat Linux 8, and using eth0 on the Linux box. Since Windows SMB works with UDP and TCP protocols, it works the same on wireless as it would on a wired Ethernet. I don't have a lot of experience with Samba, but at home I do export a Windows share to my Linux server for making backups (over wired Ethernet) and it works reliably. The Windows box can also mount Linux filesystems offered via Samba (though normally I use ssh/sftp for better internal security). I believe that once I mounted the Windows share on my laptop (Linux, wireless) just to test it, but I've never actually started a Samba server on the laptop to see if the Windows box could mount from it. In summary, wireless works at protocol layers 1 and 2; 3 and above are identical (fortunately for our sanity). You could debug Samba by dragging the machines into the same room and temporarily reverting to a wired connection. If Internet Connection Firewall were turned on in any of the boxes... Microsoft says that it's impossible to share SMB through ICF. That's actually not true but it takes more screwing around than most people want to go through, and if the outside world can get at your interface it opens you up to most of the viruses which are the reason people turn on ICF in the first place. (My internal net is aggressively protected. Hmmm, there's a black minivan that's been parked outside my home office for the last two hours...) James F.
