"iwpriv ethXX get_port3" *should* tell you:  0 means IBSS mode, 1
means old Lucent demo ad-hoc mode.  Except that for reasons I've never
been able to figure out, this doesn't seem to work properly.  IBSS
is the default on Lucent firmwares 6.06 and later.
