Link with two AP's, but not "bridge mode" AP's?

Hi all,

AP's are now very cheap, e.g. the D-link DWL-900AP+ (22Mb/s AP with external antenna connector), US$110 from www.pcnation.com.

The DWL-900AP+ has "bridge mode" so presumably there's no problem using it as the basis for linking two homes for example, or two buildings. But it's newer brother, the DI-614+ wireless AP + router, doesn't have a bridge mode. Similarly the US Robotics USR2249 (made by www.eusso.com?).

Can two such AP's be used to bridge, either alone, or with a Linux router at one or both ends, connected to the AP by ethernet, to do NAT or similar? It would be nice if so, because AP's are easily stuck at the top of a tower, whereas Linux boxes are more difficult.

Thanks for any help.
