Errrr electrically speaking, that is nonsense. Whether you punch AC
or DC over the cable is moot for the sort of runs you are talking
about. Using 12VDC would be just as effective as using 12VAC. You
box needs X Watts of power to run - by feeding 12V up the wire you can
transfer that many watts with a lower current which reduces your
losses due to resistance of the wire. AC is used for domestic power
distribution because it is easy to change the voltage using a
transformer, the main distribution lines run at may thousands of volts
(sometimes millions of volts) for exactly this reason, reduce the
resistive losses for the given power transferred.
