intel 2011 vs. orinoco on Linux

Hello, gang.

I may be off the road here and am hoping for some guidance. I had an
Intel 2011 pro/wireless on a redhat 7.0 system that was running fine
with the spectrum24t 1.02 drivers from spectrum24.sourceforge.net.
Connections to my Linksys BEFW11S4 were always fine.

I then (perhaps stupidly) decided to upgrade to 7.2 and this meant going from
a 2.2 kernel to a 2.4 kernel. Feeling the confusion about the pcmcia
stuff being half-in and half-out of the kernel plus wanting to stay
on a basically stock kernel, I chased the orinico_cs drivers. I never
really got out of the twilight zone with those, but got further with the
0.08a drivers.

Dmesg shows the card is found:

PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:0a.0

eth0: Station identity 001f:0002:0002:0001

eth0: Station name "Prism I"

eth0: index 0x01: Vcc 5.0, irq 3, io 0x0100-0x0147

Ifconfig shows I can tx but not rx:

$ ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:B3:06:04:65
          BROADCAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:20 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:9904 (9.6 Kb)

But iwconfig returns sort of nutty numbers:

eth0 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"" Nickname:"rjlaptop"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412GHz Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
          Bit Rate:1Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:0/3
          Retry limit:16 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=0 B
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0/92 Signal level:134/153 Noise level:134/153
          Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:0 invalid misc:0

It never finds my WAP. That link quality number can't be good. The
signal #'s never budge.

Has anybody actually seen the 2011 work with the Orinoco driver? Is
there something silly that I'm missing? Since this card seems to have
a dozen names, I may have crossed the streams and focused on plumbing
up the "wrong" driver. Any ideas where I've gone wrong?

All help is appreciated.
RJL
