Opening files in share in a file manager

I cannot open (for example) Word documents in a shared directory from
my file managers konqueror and xffm. The Word documents are on a
remote machine, whose share I can access without problems.

When I make a copy of the file in question in a local directory, I can
open the copy as expected.

Where could this come from? What details could I provide?
