smbclient cuts off first letter

Hello all,

I am using samba-client-2.2.5-124 on a Suse Linux 8.1 to backup files from
various PCs and Macs. Connection to Windows XP and MacOS9 (supported by DAVE)
works fine. Connection to Win98, however, seems to cause problems. Upon
sending the ls command after logon with smbclient the first letter of each
file name is cut off (see the listing below, where the file names should be
lab, igor exp, ext, lib, math and important). The same results upon
connection to another WIN98 machine.

dxpc7:/home/xxx # smbclient \\\\PC98\\jn
added interface ip=10.1.9.36 bcast=10.1.15.255 nmask=255.255.240.0
