Samba Login Question

My SAMBA server is not accepting user logins any longer. The log.nmbd file
shows errors like:

Couldn't find user "chamleed" in passdb
and
NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

Also, when I try and grep for the smbd deamon it does not show it is
running. If I grep for the nmbd daemon however it is running. From my NT
client I do get prompted for a password but it will not accept any
username/password combinations.
