[Samba] Samba AD Smart Card Login - "Your credentials could not be verified."

I need to configure a DC that supports smartcards. I've done this a few
times and the steps in the howto
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_AD_Smart_Card_Login always worked.
However, it's not working in Samba 4.22 and 4.23. I follow all the steps in
the Samba wiki howto, but when I try to log in, Windows responds with the
message "Your credentials could not be verified." I've already tested the
certificates, but nothing seems wrong. Does anyone have any idea what might
be happening?
