[Samba] Joining a Samba DC to a Windows (2019) domain

I can't find any relevant tutorial for this specific case.

If I have a new Debian with all samba AD DC packages installed, what are
the actual process to setup and join this DC to an existing (windows)
domain?

>From what  I understand, I need to upgrade schemas etc. to 2019/2016 level
BEFORE joining the domain. But can I do that schema upgrade *without*
having the domain up and running? Seems like a chicken and egg dilemma.
Maybe I have misunderstood it totally :)
