I wasn't aware of this, as I said I do not have any i386 computers,
so have no reason to use it, but it is good to know.

What is important is that Bookworm does still have an i386 iso and
Bookworm is a lot newer than Buster. The OPs problems could be being
caused by the packages required to build Samba being too old.
