I can tell you the message has origins in a previous century, but this
case has not been considered an error since 2001 (commit
84cca757397dba107fde479bc2043d8412713cf7).
The commit message was "Don't fail if no owner/group owner set.
Use existing owners", which might be the explanation you need.
We should probably raise the log level.

Now I think this one relates to a rather baffling bug. You shouldn't
see it because it shouldn't happen, and I am not sure why it does.
