Hi Rowland
Just drop this boring issue. I got rid of it running s|nmbd as root,
sorry for the ones who can't/don't want to root their phone
Now nmbd starts OK with low ports and name resolution works which makes
me free of problems with random IP.
I'm still with server max protocol=nt1
disable netbios=no
smb ports 139 445
unix extensions=no
local master=yes
prefered master=yes

but I'll try with smb2 and let you know

As for $ sign its strange the std keyboard doesn't show it. I think I
read elsewhere you lives in UK
so I guess some long press on £ key would propose $
With my Anysoft-Keyboard alternative french layout I have the $ on long
press 4 number in upper numbers row.
With google keyboard (FR I guess) I found it with long press on € sign
in numeric keyboard or directly in alpha keyboard Shift mode (upper row
too)...
Maybe some keyboard setting would allow you to show an additional row (I
have it set to 5).

Without $ (days with trump)
cp /data/data/com.termux/files/usr/share/doc/samba/smb.conf.example
/data/data/com.termux/files/usr/etc/samba/smb.conf

Have a good day
