Subject: I didn't realize it is so easy to install and configure SAMBA as a File Server until today 24 Jan 2024 Wed

Good day from Singapore,

A few years ago I was focused on installing and configuring SAMBA as an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC). Those projects were largely successful.

Yesterday 23 Jan 2024 Tue, our client, a law firm in Singapore, has an IT incident.

On its IBM Machine Type 7915 - C2A Intel Xeon Server, both 300 GB SAS harddisks in the RAID 1 mirroring array have failed. This a RAID 1 total failure. The Windows Server is truly gone and cannot boot up. Fortunately, there are Veeam backups of this server offsite in the Data Center in Singapore.

Today 24 Jan 2024 Wed, I went to the law firm and replaced the 2 pieces of 300 GB SAS harddisks. The IBM server has a LSI MegaRAID <ServerRAID M5110e> RAID controller. I have managed to re-create the RAID 1 array from scratch inside the RAID Controller Configuration Utility.

There is an offsite Debian 11 Linux Server in the Data Center holding all the Veeam backups of about 5 TB (Veeam backup repository). I proceeded to install and configure SAMBA as a File Server in the offsite Debian 11 Linux Server.

Then I rebooted the IBM server with the Veeam Recovery Media 5.0.3 thumb drive (Created from Microsoft Windows Server 2016 (1607, 64-bit) which I had created earlier in the morning. After going into Bare Metal Recovery menu, I chose Network storage and then Shared folder. In the Shared folder: box, I typed in the UNC path of the Samba File Server. Finally, after about 1 hr 40 mins or maybe longer, I was able to restore Windows Server successfully and verified that the Windows Server also booted up successfully before I leave the law firm at 6.00 PM. I was at the law firm today from 11.00 AM to 6.00 PM (7 hours including lunch hour).

I didn't really expect installing and configuring SAMBA as a File Server to be so easy until TODAY 24 Jan 2024 Wed. You only need to follow three guides. Yes, 3 guides only.

Please refer to the following list of 3 reference guides.

Reference guide No. 1: Configuring Samba on Debian
Link: https://serverspace.io/support/help/configuring-samba-on-debian/

Reference guide No. 2: smb.conf space question
Link: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1188667

Reference guide No. 3: "NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED" error appears in Deep Security
Link: https://success.trendmicro.com/dcx/s/solution/1117846-nt-status-access-denied-error-appears-in-deep-security?language=en_US

After following the above-mentioned 3 guides, I could get everything working (Samba File Server) successfully.

I am sharing useful information technology tips with all of you. I hope the above information is of use to you.

I would also like to thank Samba developers for giving us such a wonderful piece of open source software.

Thank you very much.
