Normally adding 'winbind use default domain = yes' to the smb.conf 
global section will remove the DOMAIN (provided it isn't an AD DC or you 
are using the 'autorid' idmap backend on a Unix domain member). The user 
'ADLOCAL\jlspellberg' should become 'jlspellberg' and the group 
'ADLOCAL\domain users' should become 'domain users'.

The question is though, where does 'ADLOCAL' come from ? It wasn't in 
the smb.conf you initially posted.

Are you still getting Samba crashes ?
