Usually there is no difference, no. But it's safer to check the full 
version string. Even a different revision could break the compatibility. 
Maybe it will not happen, but it could. Just use the "allow unsafe 
cluster upgrade" option if you want to mix up different Ubuntu/Debian 
versions, this should be safe - at least for a manageable period.
