[Samba] winbind separator impact

I'm on Fedora 36 and I finally got it set up so that I can login with AD
credentials.  I have 'winbind separator = +' and I was able to log in with
HOME+robcampbell via Gnome gui, console and ssh.  If I change winbind
separator to '\' and I'm not able to login any method using '\' or '\\' as
the separator.  If I comment the line out, I am able to login using ''ssh
HOME\\robcampbell at f01' and 'HOME\robcampbell' from console and Gnome gui
but when I login via Gnome gui, it doesn't fully load. I get past the login
but there is no mouse activity that I can see and nothing is on the display.
