SIGH, I should have realised, if there is a strange problem, it is
usually Apparmor or Selinux (depending on OS) and I normally purge
Apparmor. Unfortunately, Debian keeps putting it back when certain
packages are updated. I now have a script that runs the update and then
purges apparmor if it has been re-installed.
