Stefan,

Could you pls check whether you did the equivalent of the following (last step might be missing, just verifiying)

Assumedly you did those steps;

sudo touch /var/lib/clamav/clamd.sock
sudo chown clamav:clamav /var/lib/clamav/clamd.sock

Then, edit /etc/clamav/clamd.conf - uncomment this line:  <- check for this one, pls
LocalSocket /var/lib/clamav/clamd.sock

restart clamavd-demon or equivalent on your distro
Socket should be created with clamav install AFAIK

Maybe a plan B for your book could be test with an older working samba version.,
and trust VFS module is fixed in any case by samba team, before your print version of book is out :-)
