Ralph, the wikipage, that Christian referred to, says to use:

netbios name = something
clustering = yes
idmap config * : backend = autorid
idmap config * : range = 1000000-1999999

My understanding is that autorid is meant to be used with multiple 
domains, yet Christian's smb.conf is definitely for a standalone server, 
so does he need the idmap config lines ?
