You might be able to elevate smbclient's  max protocol level from the
client side as well.  SMB3 is probably not available for 3.6, but SMB2
might be.

smbclient -m SMB2

Side note:  The online docs are as of 4.10, which state that the default is
NT1 (SMB1).  But "man smbclient" on my 4.11.9 client lists the default as
SMB3.
