No dice. I've edited the smb.conf, stopped the services, copied the old
tdb again (account_policy.tdb  group_mapping.tdb  passdb.tdb
registry.tdb  secrets.tdb  share_info.tdb  winbindd_idmap.tdb); started
the services and...
