Go on, I give in, why didn't you use Louis's packages ?

Do you think there is something wrong with them ?

I can assure you that there isn't and you get other problems with Samba  
being in a place other than where the Distro expects it to be.

I wouldn't have used 4.12.0, I would have gone with the latest 4.11.x  
packages, which are available from Louis's repo
