Also, is the users name actually 'alf' ?

If so, this user will always be ignored because '1006' < '2000'

What are the passwd & group lines in /etc/nsswitch.conf ?

finally, probably hasn't happened, but has anyone deleted the user, or 
is the user locked out ?
