In case anyone else as clueless as I am runs into this: this isn't 
really a Samba issue.

Samba's fruit_get_num_bands() failed, but the "purgeable" in the bundle 
name indicates that this is a backup deemed broken by Apple's Time 
Machine (see e.g. https://www.baligu.com/pondini/TM/C13.html).  So it 
seems Time Machine won't do anything with it and I shouldn't expect 
Samba to repair it for me either.
