Thanks for the reply Rowland.  I ended up working around the issue by 
installing nss_pam_ldap and querying the ldap directory directly for 
nsswitch stuff.  I only have one server at this site, and don't want to 
go through the processes of splicing off AD functions to come sort of a 
container.
