The change to CTDB's configuration was made in 4.9. It was extensively
documented in the release notes
(https://git.samba.org/?p=samba.git;a=blob;f=WHATSNEW.txt;h=fe8086b436a30a47b79fded75c494b14b65871c5;hb=refs/heads/v4-9-stable)
in the "CTDB changes" section. However, I realise that people
installing distribution packages are a lot less likely to read that. I
would hope that the relevant Debian NEWS file would highlight the
changes on upgrade, but I haven't checked. While individual manual
pages (e.g. ctdb.conf(5) is up-to-date, and points to
ctdb-script.options(5) too) are up-to-date, perhaps there needs to be
a general section in there about configuration..

I have also tried to make the wiki section at

  https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setting_up_CTDB_for_Clustered_NFS#Using_CTDB_with_other_NFS_servers

as clear as possible without putting in so much detail that it is a
maintenance nightmare - as you've noticed, there is more out-of-date
CTDB documentation that current documentation. Perhaps I've made it
too brief. :-(

Yes, you do need them. They call out to nfs-ganesha-callout.

peace & happiness,
martin
