Hai Rowland, 

Yes, as you notice, which i also think, the cause here is resolving first over 127.0.0.1 not the ip of the server itself. 
And if bind is used, its probly also loading empty zones, also possible, 127.0.0.1 may resolve back to localhost.internal.example.com. 
And Yes, Op's script works for me also without problems.

So lets wait for the configs to have a look.
