I use Devuan and it works for myself:

rowland at devstation:~$ sudo unattended-upgrade --dry-run -v
Initial blacklisted packages:
Initial whitelisted packages:
Starting unattended upgrades script
Allowed origins are: ['o=Devuan,n=ascii', 'o=Devuan,n=ascii-updates',
'o=AptVanBelle,n=stretch-samba48,l=apt.van-belle.nl', 'a=*-security']
No packages found that can be upgraded unattended and no pending

The relevant portion of /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades is:

Unattended-Upgrade::Origins-Pattern {
         // Codename based matching:
         // This will follow the migration of a release through different
         // archives (e.g. from testing to stable and later oldstable).

So if it works on Devuan, it should work on Debian
