Try using online backup on samba v4.10.6 first (it's now been released).
Note that you can run an online backup from any machine (you don't
necessarily have to change the samba version on the DC itself).

I haven't used the samba_backup script myself. The git history says that
'samba-tool domain backup offline' "...replaces samba_backup as that
tool does not handle sam.ldb and secrets.ldb correctly.  Those two
databases need to have transactions started on them before their
downstream ldb and tdb files are backed up." Basically I think it was
possible to potentially get a corrupt/inconsistent database using the
old samba_backup script, if the database was changing at the point you
made the backup.
