The above answered my question, it is some form of Windows AD DC.

There have been numerous problems reported on here that were caused by
using a workgroup name with a dot in it. It can too easily be mixed up
with a dns domain. It also doesn't help that 'domain' can be used for
a couple of things:
It can be used for the DNS domain
It can be used for NETBIOS domain name (aka workgroup), which itself
shouldn't be mixed up with the NETBios name, which is the computers
shorthost name in uppercase.

If it is historic, then you are stuck with it.
