If saving thunderbird profile on a network directory causes problems, 
and the problem goes away by switching to local, and there aren't new 
problems created by switching it to local, then the simplest option may 
be to switch to local and move on to the next problem.  I have yet to 
meet any IT people how have too much time on their hands.
