if so, for something like hosts, my distro default is:

   hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns wins

but for my setup, I use:
hosts:  files  dns wins

I have a bind dns server on the same machine that I prefer over wins,
but if you don't have a local dns server, you might want it
last since that will likely go out on the internet, so like

  hosts: files wins dns
