My thanks for your assistance in reducing my smb.conf files to their 
relevant portions.  Now that this is available for all participants to 
inspect, I hope the cause of the problem can be determined.

As I noted in my original post, I suspect the change relates to maya 
using version 3.6.25 and sylvia using 4.3.11-Ubuntu.  Perhaps some 
defaults have changed between these versions and I need to either modify 
my current statements or add additional ones to restore proper behavior 
in the newer release.
