Didn't you say that you want to join the 2012 as a domain member and not
as a DC? This guide is about joining a 2012 as DC.

The last time that worked with a 2012 R2 as a domain member in a Samba
AD in production was in March. It worked without any problems. However
it was a Samba 4.3.?, not that outdated 4.1.17 you have. Can you update
to a supported version?
